First new US airport in 15 years

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport has officially opened.

May 25: Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, located near Panama City on Florida’s Gulf Coast, has officially opened. It is the first publicly-owned commercial service airport to be built in the US in the last 15 years, according to ATWOnline.

The new $330 million facility sports a 10,000ft runway, a 125,000 sq ft terminal, seven gates, two restaurants, two retail shops and six car rental counters and will replace Panama City Airport, which was constructed in the 1940s.

Airlines operating from the new airport in the initial stages include Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines, serving Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, Orlando and Baltimore.
