Schiphol selects new terminal design


Royal Schiphol Group (RSG) has chosen a design prepared by a consortium lead by KAAN Architecten,  collaborating with ABT, Estudio Lamela and Ineco, for its new Terminal A at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The building will open in 2023, and will enable 14m more passengers to travel through the airport each year.  It will be connected to the existing facilities, maintaining the ‘one terminal’ concept that enhances connection opportunities and reduces transit time.  The new structure will adjoin Departure Hall 1 and Arrival Hall 1, keeping all the facilities are under one roof.

RSG says the expansion is required in order to strengthen the competitive position of Mainport Schiphol, to keep pace with the growth in aviation and to continue to enhance its position as ‘Europe’s preferred airport’ among both airlines and passengers.  The firm is carrying out the expansion under the auspices of the the Capital Programme, a project which coordinates and manages various complex, large-scale projects in an optimal way to ensure the airport continues to operate normally during construction and renovation work.  The last time the terminals at Schiphol were permanently expanded was in 1993, when the current Departure Halls 3 and 4 and Arrival Halls 3 and 4 were built.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol CEO Jos Nijhuis commented: “This design suits the Schiphol DNA.  That was the main reason why the jury decided to choose this design.  The design solution contributes to excellent processing, it provides optimal support to passengers, contributes to our sustainability ambitions and is future-proof.  We are looking forward to welcoming airlines and passengers in the new terminal and adjacent new pier.”

A spokesperson for KAAN Architecten added: “The most inspiring architectural and planning DNA at Schiphol for our design team is that of the 1967 Departures Hall.  DNA which is characterised by abundant daylight, simplicity of space and a substantial spatiality.  It is particularly striking that materials and construction are so minimally conspicuous.  The repetitions that defines the space – the row of columns, the information panels, the ticket kiosks, the façade ribs, the ceiling lamps – all contribute to a calming rhythm.  This is the true essence of Schiphol’s DNA: functionality is a priority – an exacting rather than bare functionality – it is exacting in how the functionality embeds comfort, daily ease of use and a suitability of purpose. This leads to a natural simplicity.”
