Major redevelopment planned at Pittsburgh


Plans for a major revamp of the terminal at Pittsburgh have been unveiled.  Managers acknowledge that the airport is no longer a hub for connecting traffic with one dominant airline, and have decided to take the opportunity to update and right-size the facilities.  Objectives of the project also include modernising the outdated facilities to meet the needs of passengers and airlines, optimising the infrastructure to make best use new technology to improve security and passenger flow, eliminating space that is currently not used, saving money on maintenance of old and deteriorating systems, and keeping airline charges as low as possible.

The revised layout will result in the current landside building being abandoned.  Its replacement will integrate the arrival and departure facilities into the existing 25-year old X-shaped mid-field concourse.  A new $783.8mk landside building will be constructed between consourses C and D concourses, which will house the security and baggage facilities, a reconfigured international arrivals area, and a 3,000-space car park.  The changes will also result in the closure of the automated tram that moves passengers between the two structures, and a reduction in the number of gates from 75 to 51.  The existing landside building may be demolished, but options for it to be redeveloped for other commercial uses are still being investigated.  The total cost of the project is expected to be around $1.1bn, including $258.8m for the new parking garage and $57.1m for road upgrades.  Allegheny County Airport Authority claims no tax income will be needed to finance the work, and that airline charges will not be increased.  It is hoped work will start in 2019, with completion scheduled for 2023.

When the mid-field concourse was built, it was capable of handling 32m ppa.  The revised structures will  have a capacity of 18m ppa, although further extensions will enable throughput to be increased to 25m ppa.  The airport is currently handling just over 8m ppa, a decrease of almost a half since 2003 when US Air used it as a hub.
