Schiphol introduces bookings for security

Passengers departing from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport can now book a ‘time’ to pass through security.

The new arrangements, which are part of the airport’s Personal Security Pass program, enable travellers flying to selected Schengen zone destinations to reserve a slot at the screening checkpoint.  Bookings can be made between four days one hour and 15 minutes before departure, via the airport’s website or app.  During the pilot project, 30 passengers will be able to move through the Personal Security Pass entry gate every 15 minutes, and more than 400 time slots will be made available each day.  A trial of the new approach is taking place between November 28 and December 11.

When a passenger arrives at the entrance to security control, a QR code in an email generated when the booking was made is scanned to confirm the access arrangements are valid.  Travellers then self-scan their boarding pass at the self-service security gate, and will be able to pass through security using a dedicated lane.  The facilities are adjacent to check-in desk 1A in Departure Hall 1, at check-in desk 1A, but may also be used be those passing through Departure Hall 3.

The airport authority says that it is testing the system to establish whether travellers value the certainty of a fixed time to go through security, and how such a program could impact the flow of passengers at security control.  If the pilot project proves successful, it will be rolled out for general use.
