Berlin Brandenburg planned to open in October 2020

The Supervisory Board of Berlin Brandenburg Airport (FBB) has announced that the opening of the new terminal will now take place in October 2020, some eight years after the facility was originally expected to start handling passenger flights.

The board viewed the underlying problems that need to be resolved before the terminal can be used for passenger flights.  An intensive discussion involving FBB as well as external project management experts, the planning authorities and TÜV Rheinland.  Included were detailing how issues surrounding the terminal’s fire protection system, doors and sprinklers, could be resolved, and the debate also considered a risk assessment that has recently completed.  A consensus was reached that a responsible and valid view is now available, which provides a realistic basis the additional work needed up to the commissioning.  As a result, the Supervisory Board approved the executive’s plans to open of the airport’s terminal in October 2020.

Financing issues arising from the delayed opening were also discussed. The board will be advised in its meeting at the beginning of March 2018 what additional funding is required in the run up to the opening of the facility.

State Secretary Rainer Bretschneider, Chairman of the Supervisory Board: “I am convinced of the validity of the current planning. I was convinced by today’s discussion. Now it will be important to implement the planning properly and purposefully. It’s about winning back lost trust.”

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO Berlin Brandenburg Airport added: “Today’s Supervisory Board meeting marks the start of the final phase of the terminal’s completion, and thus the start of BER.  It is important that the Supervisory Board gave its support to the opening date of October 2020 after an engaging debate.  The schedule is authoritative and reliable.  This allows us to achieve both security and orientation.”
