DHL opens new Brussels hub

DHL Express has a opened a new regional hub at Brussels Airport, Belgium.  The facility, built at a cost of €140m, covers 390,000sq ft (36,500m²) and quadruples the firm’s capacity at the airport.

The building includes offices and warehousing, and enables the express logistics operator to handle around 42,000 shipments per hour.  The hub is the fifth largest on the conpany’s global network, and its completion will create more than 200 new jobs as the throughput increases.

DHL’s newly extended facilities rely on the latest technology, better insulation and more efficient processes, enabling the carbon footprint of its operation to be reduced by around 770 tons of CO2 per annum.  It is also certified to the latest Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) security standards.

Koen Gouweloose, Vice President of DHL’s Brussels Hub, said: “This new hub is a great example of some of the latest state-of-the-art logistics technology. It allows us to process even more packages even more quickly and efficiently. As a hub, this allows us to play an important role in the network, while paying close attention to security and working conditions for our 1,200 employees, who are in turn ensuring that our clients are receiving the great service they expect from DHL Express.”

The site now handles 42 flights a day and has links to European destinations, as well as direct intercontinental connections to the USA, the Middle East and Africa.  It was built despite the firm having moved much of its continental European air operation to Leipzig, Germany, ten years ago and signals a renewed focus on the Belgian market resulting from rapidly increasing business activity.

DHL Express chief executive Ken Allen added: “Brussels plays a crucial role in the worldwide DHL Express network. Brussels Hub is one of our largest hubs in the world and because of its location in the logistics heart of Europe, it also plays an important role in connecting companies from this region with the world.”
