The first phase of the expanded airport terminal building at St. John’s International Airport will open on July 12.
Construction first phase of the expansion commenced in late 2014 and will add 145,000sq ft (13,471m2) to the departures area of the terminal building. Flights will operate through the new pre-board screening area, which will be accessible on the first floor adjacent to the check-in area. A new and expanded departures lounge will feature additional seating and gate capacity, as well as more food and beverage and retail outlets.
The existing terminal was designed to accommodate 900,000 ppa. Since it opened in 2002, the annual passenger volume has grown to more than 1.5m ppa resulting in a building with many operational constraints and limited services. Construction of a second phase will commence in 2019 and add approximately 100,000sq ft (9,290m2) to the arrivals area. When the project is completed in 2022, the main building will be more than double its existing size at 420,000sq ft (39,019m2).
